About Granny Lala

I am most often asked two questions.

Who is Granny Lala? Granny Lala is me! Lara Weihs. Yes, I am a real Granny to my beautiful granddaughter, Brooklynn.

Why do I bake gluten and (mostly) allergen free? Because that’s how I eat. I had tested positive for several foods sensitivities (including wheat, dairy and soy) about 15 years ago. At the time I tried to eat less of the many foods that I was sensitive to, but didn’t completely remove most of them from my diet. When it was suggested again that I completely avoid wheat, dairy and soy for a while, I gave it a shot. Wow! What a huge difference. I didn’t realize how much better I could feel. I suddenly had much more clarity, focus and energy. Now, I choose to avoid wheat, dairy and soy entirely because I don’t like the way I feel when I eat them.

As a person with multiple dietary restrictions, I can attest that what is currently available on the market is less than delicious, if you can find it at all. It’s not as difficult anymore to find gluten free products, but very few of them are also dairy and soy free. I loved baking before I changed my diet, so I pulled out my recipes and started experimenting with alternate ingredients until I got them just right. Then I had another problem… If I wanted a muffin or a brownie, I had to bake a whole batch of them. But I certainly didn’t want to eat that many, so I gave them away to my friends… and they really liked them. It seemed like everyone I talked to either had dietary restrictions themselves or knew someone who did and they also had trouble finding great tasting fresh treats.

Now I had treats at home, but eating out or meeting for coffee was still difficult. So I decided to open a wholesale bakery that provides gluten and mostly allergen free baked goods to restaurants and coffee houses. Because my products are fresh, without any preservatives, I only bake for and deliver to, the retail outlets close enough to get the product the day it is baked.
